Hypnotherapy: Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the frequently asked questions about Hypnotherapy.

Q: What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

A: Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years, it’s the simple process of putting someone into a trance. Hypnotherapy is therapy, which uses hypnosis as powerful tool to make changes.

Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis – but hypnosis is not hypnotherapy.

Q: What is Integrated Hypnotherapy?

A: Integrated Hypnotherapy combines the best of Hypnosis, Solution Focused Psychotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic-programming (NLP) and Life Coaching skills.

You will find that skilful hypnotherapy connects people to their unconscious mind in a respectful, yet useful way. This is what the majority of clients who seek emotional or behavioural help actually want from a therapist.

Q: What happens in a Hypnotherapy session?

A: Normally I will take detailed history, discuss your goal, and what you would like to see or feel at the end of your sessions.
Therefore, I’ll use a range of different techniques to teach you how to relax, make yourself feel comfortable and work with you towards achieving your goal.

After a session you may feel uplifted, lighter and very relaxed. Often change is very subtle, as your hypnotherapist I will be working with you unconscious mind, and you may just notice a very positive shift in how you are feeling.

Q: How does hypnosis feel?

A: Hypnosis is a natural state of mind; people are often surprised that they hear every word, and could get up and walk out of the room at any moment. Therefore, unless you enter a deeper state, you may not seem any different, just very relaxed.

It’s similar to drifting off to sleep at night or perhaps when watching the television. It’s that stage when you are not quite awake and not quite asleep. You may feel a sense of weightlessness or you may feel heaviness as all your muscles relax.

Everyone experiences it differently and most people are surprised at just how relaxing it really is.

Q: Will I give up control when I’m hypnotised?

A: During the session you are always the one in control. It’s like driving a car, you’ll be in the driving seat turning the wheel, changing gear etc. As your hypnotherapist I’ll be the passenger in the other seat, simply giving you the suggestions about which direction is best to go. As a result, it’s up to you to follow my suggestions.

In addition, your unconscious mind will not allow you to do anything that will harm you or go against your core values.

Q: How many sessions will I need?

A: I’ve found 3 – 6 sessions is normal for most problems. However, because everyone is different, this might be slightly more or less depending on the problem.

Q: Why do I need to purchase a deposit for my session?

A: I hire a room from Brighton & Hove Therapies and to secure your booking I pay the hire fee Therefore I ask for this fee from you to confirm your commitment to attending the session.

Furthermore, Brighton & Hove Therapies operate a 48 hour cancellation period. Therefore taking a deposit means I won’t need to chase you for a late cancellation fee if you choose not to attend the session, or cancel with less than 48hrs notice.

You must pay the deposit to guarantee your booking.

Q: How do I pay for my sessions?

A: Please pay by credit/debit card, PayPal or by cash.

Q: Do you offer a free consultation?
